MIRASTO: Migrant Self-Organizations
Migrant Self-Organizations and Social Pedagogical Continuing Education – A Responsive Study
Project at a Glance
Project Description
The aim of this responsive study is to develop, in collaboration with migrant self-organizations (MSOs), modules and materials for diversity-sensitive continuing education in (social) pedagogical fields of practice. These resources will also serve as a foundation for establishing a sustainable research–practice network.
To this end, cooperative structures will be established between Goethe University Frankfurt and the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg in collaboration with migrant self-organizations and graduates from different programme cohorts. Institutional continuing education programmes currently face a shortage of qualified professionals while, at the same time, many migrants from non-EU countries possess pedagogical qualifications and professional experience that are not, or only partially, recognized in Germany due to systemic, legal, socio-cultural, professional, and language-related barriers.
Continuing education programmes developed by migrant self-organizations in recent years are therefore of considerable importance for both professional qualification and individual life trajectories. Within the MIRASTO consortium, concepts and models of continuing education are examined with regard to their significance for professional and social integration. The participatory project pursues three objectives:
1. To investigate the significance of institutional continuing education for pedagogical professions using qualitative methods, including document and website analyses, interviews, and group discussions within a longitudinal research design.
2. To examine the relationship between institutional continuing education and professional integration through the biographical trajectories of programme participants from three different cohorts (quasi-longitudinal design).
3. To develop modules and materials for diversity-sensitive professionalization in educational institutions through the active involvement of two migrant self-organizations.
The findings will continuously circulate between the migrant self-organizations and the project partners, fostering the development of a multiperspectival research–practice network.
