Diversity in Medicine: Strategies to Improve Equal Opportunities in Applications for Medical Studies

The Project at a Glance

Project Description

The overarching goal is to increase cultural and socioeconomic diversity among medical students in Hamburg. An action research design with a strongly participatory approach is used to identify barriers and enabling factors in the application process for medical studies and to implement a package of interventions.

At the heart of the project is the active involvement of various stakeholders throughout the entire research and development process, in particular the target group — students with a migration history and low socioeconomic status — as well as teachers responsible for career guidance, educational staff at schools, migrant organisations and cultural associations, representatives of the equal opportunities and integration officers at the University of Hamburg, and medical students with a migration history.

The interventions developed through this process are piloted at three secondary schools in disadvantaged districts of Hamburg. Through measures aimed at raising diversity awareness among stakeholders, they are intended to contribute to greater application success among students in graduating classes.

In a final step, the conditions for success and the scalability of the interventions are assessed.
