BuildingBridges: Mentoring & Empowerment

Mentoring and Empowering Girls and FLINTA of Colour to Participation, Achievement and Resilience

The Project at a Glance

Project Description

The interdisciplinary research and development consortium between the Department of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology and Psychotherapy at Freie Universität Berlin (FUB), Stiftung SPI in Berlin, and the Department of Information Systems and Sustainable Supply Chain Management at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE) is dedicated to empowering and mentoring girls and FLINTA* of Colour from grade 10 onwards in order to strengthen educational participation in the field of psychosocial professions.

Using a transdisciplinary approach, the project works together with key practitioners to design a diversity-sensitive, intersectional, and low-threshold mentoring and empowerment programme (MEP). This programme includes discrimination-sensitive coaching that identifies the talents of girls* of Colour and activates their individual potential.

In addition, mentors and role models of Colour are involved, sharing their own educational biographies. Students of Colour also contribute as mentors by helping to identify existing barriers to educational participation in academic career paths and by developing solutions.

The entire project is accompanied by research into perceived stressors, needs, and barriers to educational participation among students, as well as the acceptance and feasibility of the MEP. It is also supported by an innovative digital storytelling platform, co-designed with practice partners and young people, which enables project partners — and later users as well — to create audiovisual accounts of their experiences and make them available as a digital dialogue of personal narratives.
